I like to think by the age of 24, having taken some what of a broken path towards post-secondary education, that this twisty road has taught me a few things. I present to you a list, if you will:
-You could always take the easy, straight path. Is it the most fun? No. Will you learn the most? Definitely not.
-You could always play it safe and never risk making mistakes. Have fun living in your sheltered world of ignorance.
-You know how they say it's okay to make mistakes, just don't make the same ones twice? I disagree. Makes the same mistakes as many times as you need too. We all learn at different speeds and in different ways. What's the difference between learning how to walk, read, and learning from our mistakes? Take your time. And don't ever, ever give up.
-Your comfort zone just might be non-existent. And that's a good thing. If you keep walls up it just makes it hard to break them down. Don't put them up (figuratively, of course) in the first place.
-Take whatever classes look interesting, and some that don't just for the hell of it. There are no excuses in my opinion for not doing some kind of post-secondary, at some point in your life. Does this make me a snob? If so, I'm ok with that. There's always a way to get money, and as last year's Student Council President Mark Lawson said to me: "education is not a foot race." It may take some of us longer to figure out what we want to do and that's okay. Some of us will get married and have kids first. Some of us will be retired before going back to school. Hey, post-sec is free for the over 60 set (at least in Québec), so maybe that's the way to go!
